On February 19, 1812, 24 year old Adoniram and his young wife set sail for India and though they were rejected entrance into India to preach to the Hindus, they finally found an open door in Burma. On arrival, they faced many challenges. There was not one known Christian among Burma’s population of millions. They had no friends and the region where they lived was infested with robbers. They also found disturbing the various fetish practices of the people who were mainly idol worshippers. Things were worsened by the death of their first baby at eight months old.
